Many installation problems can be solved by ensuring that you have the latest version of Microsoft ActiveSync installed on your desktop computer. ActiveSync can be found on the Microsoft web site.

How do I determine exactly what version of Essential Evidence Plus I have?

To locate the build number of your Essential Evidence Plus program, select Help -> About from the application menu. One of the first pieces of information on the About screen is the build number.

You can determine whether you have the latest version of Essential Evidence Plus by comparing your build number with the number listed here.

When I attempt to install Essential Evidence Plus, a message stating "Installation was not successful" appears on the handheld screen.

This error occurs for unknown reasons on some Pocket PC devices. The installation data is successfully copied to the device, but the device fails to process it properly. The solution is to locate the CAB file that has been copied to the device, and manually continue the installation process:

  • On your handheld device, launch the File Explorer application. This can be found under the Programs list on the Start Menu.
  • Browse to My Device, and look for a CAB file, which may be named IR...CAB, or InfoPOEMs...CAB or InfoRetriever...CAB. If the file is not located under My Device, also check any folders named Storage Card, SD Card, or CF Card.
  • Tap the file to complete the installation of Essential Evidence Plus.

When I attempt to install Essential Evidence Plus, a message stating "This file is not a valid CE set up file" appears.

Usually when this error occurs, it is a problem with your device, rather than the installation file. The problem seems to typically occur on Dell Axim devices. Please try the following steps one at a time until the problem is resolved. If none of these steps solves your problem, Contact Us for further assistance.

  1. Make sure you can install other applications to your SD or CF card. If you can, try solution (2). If not, there is a problem with your card and/or device. Please contact your vendor for technical support.
  2. Install any available updates that are available from your device vendor. Once you have updated your device, try installing Essential Evidence Plus again.
  3. If neither of the above two methods solve your problem, you can try installing Essential Evidence Plus to your internal memory using the .CAB method. Look for the "CAB File Download (Alternate Install Method)" on the Pocket PC Downloads Page. Copy the CAB file to your device's external memory via ActiveSync or via a memory card reader. On your device, locate the CAB file using File Explorer, and tap on it to install.

I maintain a number of Pocket PC devices for my Institution. Is there a more efficient way to install Essential Evidence Plus on them?

We can offer a few suggestions for those who install and maintain Essential Evidence Plus on a large number of Palm OS and Pocket PC devices. Please see our Tips for Institutional Clients for Faster Installation of Essential Evidence Plus for more information.

When I tap on the Essential Evidence Plus icon after installation, I get the following message, or one similar:
"Can't open database file (IRMenuICD9)"

This message indicates that the Essential Evidence Plus program file was successfully installed to your device, but one or more of the data files was not successfully installed to your device's external memory.

In most cases this means that you need to disconnect and reconnect your device to your PC to perform an additional ActiveSync operation, which will install the Essential Evidence Plus data files to your device.

If the additional ActiveSync does not solve the problem, try running the entire installation program again.

How do I register the Essential Evidence Plus program?

If you have installed the Essential Evidence Plus Updater application on your Windows PC, the Updater should automatically register your copy of Essential Evidence Plus for you when you connect your device via ActiveSync. You may be asked to supply your Essential Evidence Plus password to register.

If you have not installed the Essential Evidence Plus Updater or the Updater is not properly registering your installation of Essential Evidence Plus, you will need to manually register the program. See the detailed registration instructions.
