Which Essential Evidence Plus for Palm OS installation file should I download?

There are two types of files that you may download to install Essential Evidence Plus to your Palm OS device. One has an extension of .exe and is a Windows Executable Installer. The other has an extension of .zip and is a ZIP compressed archive.

Most users of Windows Desktop computers should download the .exe file, which is an automated installation process. If you are a Windows user and are having problems with the automated installer, or if you are a user of a non-Windows operating system such as MacOS or Linux, you should download the .zip file and perform a Manual Installation.

How do I determine exactly what version of Essential Evidence Plus I have?

To locate the build number of your Essential Evidence Plus program, select File -> About from the application menu. One of the first pieces of information on the About screen is the build number.

You can determine whether you have the latest version of Essential Evidence Plus by comparing your build number with the number listed here.

The Installer produces the errors "Internal Error 25000" and "Installation on Palm is interrupted" and fails

The installer program was unable to find the Palm files that it needs to perform the installation. Please ensure that you have the latest version of the Palm Desktop software installed on your computer (at least version 4.1).

If your Palm Desktop software is up to date and the installer still refuses to run, you will have to perform a Manual Installation of the Essential Evidence Plus files.

When I perform the HotSync operations during the installation process, it appears as though no files are installed, and Essential Evidence Plus is not present on my device or will not run properly.

First ensure that you have the latest version of the Palm Desktop software installed on your computer (at least version 4.1).

Also, be sure that your expansion memory card is present and fully inserted into your Palm device.

If you continue to have problems installing Essential Evidence Plus, try performing a Manual Installation of the Essential Evidence Plus files.

When performing a HotSync to install the Essential Evidence Plus data files, the HotSync times out and the data files are not properly installed.

This problem has been reported on the Palm Treo 650, 680, and 700p devices. It seems that these devices have problems installing more than 15MB of data during a single HotSync (the Essential Evidence Plus database is 40MB).

We are continuing to investigate this problem, but the current solution is to perform a manual installation without HotSync.

The HotSync log contains an error like "The following file(s) could not be installed to the SecureDigital (SD) Card because there is no application on your handheld to open these files"

First ensure that you have performed the Initialize Essential Evidence Plus step of the installation by tapping on the IR icon on your device. Then perform a HotSync again.

If you have performed the Initialize Essential Evidence Plus step and you still receive this error, ensure that you have the latest version of the Palm Desktop software installed on your computer (at least version 4.1).

When I tap on the Essential Evidence Plus icon after installation, nothing happens, or the screen just blinks

The main Essential Evidence Plus program file has been properly installed, but additional resources and data files must be installed before Essential Evidence Plus will function properly.

If you have previously used Essential Evidence Plus on your device without problem and this behavior suddenly develops, ensure that your expansion card is fully inserted into your device, and that the card hasn't become corrupted. If the card is inserted and not currupted, try re-installing Essential Evidence Plus to replace the missing data files.

In most other cases this means that you need to perform an additional HotSync operation to install the Essential Evidence Plus resource and data files to your device.

If the additional HotSync does not solve the problem, try running the entire installation program again. If you continue to receive this error, then you should check your HotSync Log for any error messages that may indicate why the data files were not properly installed to your expansion card. You may also wish to try doing a Manual Installation of the Essential Evidence Plus files.

When I tap on the Essential Evidence Plus icon after installation, I get the following message, or one similar:
"Can't open database file (IRMenuICD9)"

This message indicates that the Essential Evidence Plus PRC file was successfully installed to your device, but one or more of the data files was not successfully installed to your device's external memory.

In most cases this means that you need to perform an additional HotSync operation to install the Essential Evidence Plus data files to your device.

Can I install the Essential Evidence Plus data files to the internal memory of my device?

The answer to this question depends on your device. Most Palm OS devices only have one kind of internal memory, known as "program memory". The Essential Evidence Plus data files cannot be installed to program memory. The Palm OS only allows Palm format files (usually with extension of .prc or .pdb) to be installed to internal memory. All other file types, including the Essential Evidence Plus data files, must be installed to expansion memory.

Some newer Palm OS devices, such as the Tungsten T5 and LifeDrive, have expansion memory built into the device. This may be referred to as "internal flash" memory or it may be a hard drive. Essential Evidence Plus data files can be installed to this type of internal memory, as long as there is sufficient space available.

I maintain a number of Pocket PC devices for my Institution. Is there a more efficient way to install Essential Evidence Plus on them?

We can offer a few suggestions for those who install and maintain Essential Evidence Plus on a large number of Palm OS and Pocket PC devices. Please see our Tips for Institutional Clients for Faster Installation of Essential Evidence Plus for more information.

The HotSync operation to install the VDF (data) files takes so long!

We have found that the installation time of Essential Evidence Plus on Palm OS is largely dependent on the quality and speed of the memory card that is used in the device. In our experience, the complete process of a normal installation takes less than three minutes when a SanDisk Ultra II SD card is used in the handheld device (in contrast to 15-90 minutes with other SD cards). Such "Professional" grade memory cards are available for most types of memory cards, and they are typically a bit more expensive than other memory cards. However, the additional cost provides greatly enhanced reading and writing speed.

(Please note that we are not endorsing any particular product. The products mentioned here are examples of the type of technology that we recommend for efficient installations of the Essential Evidence Plus program to Palm OS devices.)

Can I install Essential Evidence Plus to my Palm device using a Mac OS desktop computer?

Mac OS desktop computer users can install Essential Evidence Plus to a Palm OS device by following the instructions for installing Essential Evidence Plus for Palm OS (Mac OS X).

Please note that this proceedure has been tested with the Palm Desktop software for Mac OS, and may not work properly if you use other software to sync your Palm OS device to your Mac. In particular, we have had reports that this proceedure does not work properly with The Missing Sync software.

How do I completely delete all Essential Evidence Plus files from my PALM device?

You will need to delete files from both the Handheld Memory and the Expansion Memory:

  1. Handheld Memory - One file.
From the "home" screen of your PALM OS device, tap your stylus in the upper left hand corner of the screen to open the Menu. Under App, select Delete. Make sure the top line says " Delete from: HANDHELD". Tap on Essential Evidence Plus. Tap Delete.
  2. Expansion Memory - between 23 and 34 (depending on which version you have installed) files in PALM_VDF folder.
We suggest you download and install the "FileZ" open source application, which you can download from the Essential Evidence Plus website or from PalmGear. FileZ will allow you to delete the files on your expansion memory. Once you have installed FileZ, perform the following steps (NOTE: Your experience may be slightly different depending on which version of FileZ you have installed):
    • Tap on the FileZ icon from the home screen
    • Tap View and Edit Files
    • Tap on the arrow next to External Card to expand the file tree
    • Tap on the PALM_VDF folder (not on the arrow next to it); the arrow should turn black
    • From the Application Menu, select Item -> Delete...

An alternative method for removing the Essential Evidence Plus data files is to use a USB memory card reader attached to your Desktop computer to remove the PALM_VDF directory from your memory card. You may wish to use this option if you have such a device and are familiar with its use.

How do I register the Essential Evidence Plus program?

If you have installed the Essential Evidence Plus Updater application on your Windows PC, the Updater should automatically register your copy of Essential Evidence Plus for you when you perform a HotSync. You may be asked to supply your Essential Evidence Plus password to register.

If you have not installed the Essential Evidence Plus Updater or the Updater is not properly registering your installation of Essential Evidence Plus, you will need to manually register the program. See the detailed registration instructions.
